Elbow PAIN

About

Common factors causing elbow pain are fractures, strains and sprains. Another common cause of pain is the dislocation of the elbow, which usually happens due to one of the bones that form the elbow joint, getting displaced. Other common causes of pain are tennis and golfer’s elbow, which are types of tendinitis that provoke swelling. Both of these conditions are very similar in most aspects, except that in tennis elbow, the outside of the elbow is affected or injured, while in the case of golfer’s elbow, it’s the inside that becomes affected. Rheumatoid arthritis  and osteoarthritis are also a major cause of pain.

Common causes for elbow pain:

• Strains or Sprains

• Dislocated Elbow

• Fractured Elbow

• Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow

• Arthritis

At South Miami Walk-In Orthopedics and Sports Medicine we offer comprehensive care solutions for patients suffering from elbow pain. We count on the vast experience of our doctors who work meticulously to get the proper diagnosis and treatment for our patients. In general, our procedure includes examining the affected area in close detail and designing a personalized plan of treatment that maximizes the chances of a proper and fast recovery.

Conservative therapy focuses on reducing or eliminating the overdone motion that affected the elbow in the first place. This type of therapy consists of reducing the usual activities performed by this part of the body, applying ice and getting proper rest. Additional physical therapies are also recommended in order to improve blood circulation, elbow strength, and joint flexibility.

Pain medications are often prescribed to patients who have swelling or are suffering from high levels of pain. Doctors also prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, and analgesics. There might be additional medications prescribed if the patient is suffering from any particular disease such as gout or arthritis. However, these should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor and subsequent follow-ups should be scheduled in order to measure the effectiveness of the medications.

When conservative therapy and medication isn’t helping, doctors opt for surgical methods. Fracture repair, arthroscopy, elbow replacement are some of the surgeries performed. By surgery, the broken or dislocated bone is either removed, repaired, or equipped with metal plates and screws until they heal.
